"Only a complete Sikh is authorized to perform kirtan" - Akal Takht's strong stance on Jassi's kirtan case
A recent performance of Shabad Gurbani and Kirtan by renowned Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi at a religious ceremony has sparked controversy. Responding to this, the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Singh Sahib Giani Kuldeep Singh Gadgaj, stated that according to Sikh tradition and customs, only a devout Sikh can perform Kirtan.
The Jathedar clarified that the Sikh Rehat Maryada (code of conduct) clearly states that only a Sikh, and not a lapsed Sikh, can perform Kirtan in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib. This means that the right to perform Kirtan and its practice should only be held by a person who is a true Sikh and adheres to the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib.
Adherence to Tradition Essential in Religious Events
He further added that adherence to traditions is extremely important in religious events, and any violation will be considered against the tenets of Sikhism. After this post went viral on social media, it elicited various reactions from viewers and fans.
