Tragedy at Surajkund Mela: Police Inspector Killed, 12 Injured in Swing Collapse.

A swing ride collapsed at the Surajkund Mela in Faridabad, Haryana, on Saturday. ​​One police inspector died in the accident, and 12 people were injured. The injured are receiving treatment at private hospitals and the Badshah Khan Civil Hospital. The fairgrounds were evacuated after the incident.

The deceased inspector has been identified as Jagdish Prasad. He was the SHO (Station House Officer) of Chandhat police station in Palwal district. He was due to retire on March 31st of this year.

Eighteen people were on the swing ride, known as the "Tsunami" ride, when the incident occurred. A video of the incident has surfaced, showing the swing falling from a height. Following the collapse, people at the fairgrounds scattered in panic. The Surajkund police station has registered a case against unknown persons. Further investigation is underway.

Tourism Minister Dr. Arvind Sharma arrived at the fairgrounds at 10 PM. After inspecting the site, he visited the injured at Supreme Hospital. He said, "Orders have been given to investigate the entire matter. A committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the ADC (Additional Deputy Commissioner)." People started screaming as the swing collapsed: Raghav, a shopkeeper and eyewitness at the Surajkund Mela, said he was attending to customers. At around 6:15 PM, the swing suddenly collapsed and got stuck in the railing. People on the stuck swing started screaming. He climbed onto the swing to rescue people and gradually helped 7 to 8 people down. After that, he also came down.
Some people were rescued, then it suddenly fell further: Raghav further explained that the swing suddenly fell further down. The railing also fell on him, causing minor injuries to his shoulder. After this, police officers also joined the rescue efforts. An inspector standing there was also injured. Police teams then arrived and the area was cleared.

DC says vendor's negligence will be investigated

DC Ayush Sinha said that several people were injured in the incident. Some were admitted to a private hospital, while others are being treated at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital. Strict action will be taken in this matter. The vendor's negligence will be investigated, and a case will be registered against those responsible. SHO Jagdish Prasad of Chandhat police station in Palwal also died after being hit by the swing.

Nodal officer says committee inspected the rides

The fair's nodal officer, Harvinder Yadav, said that the causes of the accident are being investigated. Strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty. The administration had formed a committee to inspect the rides. Inspections were conducted daily, only after which the rides were allowed to operate.

Gate collapses in the evening, one person injured

On Saturday evening, a designer gate near gate number 2 of the fair suddenly collapsed. The gate was already leaning. One person was injured in the incident. However, he did not sustain serious injuries. The fair administration then arrived at the scene and removed the debris of the gate.

The 39th International Surajkund Crafts Mela started on January 31st and was inaugurated by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan. The fair will continue until February 15th. Approximately 1150 artists from 30 states are participating. Artists from 46 countries have also arrived.
