The threat of renewed military conflict in the Middle East has intensified significantly. US President Donald Trump abruptly canceled his planned Memorial Day weekend trip to his golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, returning straight to the White House to hold urgent security meetings. The sudden shift in schedule comes amid reports that the United States is actively preparing for potential military strikes against Iran if ongoing, indirect diplomatic negotiations fail to yield a breakthrough.
"Locked and Loaded": US Military Prepares for Strikes
According to defense and intelligence officials with direct knowledge of the situation, several high-ranking personnel within the US military have also canceled their holiday weekend plans in anticipation of a potential command to strike. The Pentagon has reportedly started updating recall rosters and emergency preparedness protocols for US installations overseas, particularly across the Middle East.
President Trump had previously stated that the US military was "all set to start" a multi-phase air campaign—historically referred to as "Operation Epic Fury," but potentially rebranded as "Operation Sledgehammer." While the US and Iran have been maintaining a fragile, temporary ceasefire since early April, the White House has warned that the timeline could resume at a moment's notice. Iran Responds Defiantly to "Enemy's Foolishness"
Tehran has reacted with strong defiance to the mounting American military pressure. Iranian military spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia explicitly warned that any renewed aggression from the US or Israel would be met with an immediate, overwhelming counter-offensive.
"If the enemy is foolish enough to fall into the Zionist trap again and launches new aggression against our beloved Iran, we will open new fronts against it, with new equipment and new methods," Akraminia stated via Iran's ISNA news agency.
Iran has also taken tighter structural control over the critical global trade bottleneck, the Strait of Hormuz, by establishing the Persian Gulf Strait Authority. Iranian commanders have hinted that they may impose strict permitting systems on maritime transit as well as the undersea fiber-optic internet cables running through the waterway, threatening major disruptions to global trade and digital communications.

The sudden escalation occurs just as a deadline imposed by the Trump administration approaches.
