Char Dham Yatra 2026: Minister Satpal Maharaj Issues Urgent Health Advisory to Combat Mountain Sickness
Uttarakhand Tourism and Culture Minister Satpal Maharaj has issued a critical health advisory for pilgrims participating in the Char Dham Yatra 2026. Highlighting the physical demands of the pilgrimage, the Minister warned of the dangers of Altitude Sickness (Mountain Sickness) as devotees ascend to heights exceeding 10,000 feet.
To ensure a safe journey, the government has recommended a "Slow and Steady" approach to acclimatization. The core of the appeal is to avoid rushing the ascent. Instead, pilgrims are advised to take a mandatory rest day for every 2,000 to 3,000 feet of altitude gained. This allows the body to adjust to thinning oxygen levels, significantly reducing the risk of respiratory failure or cardiac arrest.

Key Safety Guidelines:
Acclimatization: Spend 24–48 hours at lower altitudes (like Rishikesh or Haridwar) before heading higher.
Mandatory Checks: Pilgrims over 55 or those with pre-existing conditions (diabetes, heart issues, asthma) must undergo medical screenings.
Hydration & Nutrition: Drink at least 2 liters of water daily and avoid caffeine, alcohol, or smoking, which can worsen altitude sickness.
Emergency Response: Keep a pulse oximeter handy; if oxygen levels drop below 90%, seek immediate help at the nearest Medical Relief Post (MRP).
