Election Eve Violence in Murshidabad: Crude Bomb Attack and Clashes Reported

Twin Incidents of Violence Rock Murshidabad on Election Eve: Crude Bombs and Clashes Raise Alarm

With polling just hours away, severe tension has gripped the Murshidabad district in West Bengal following two major incidents of election eve violence. A late-night bomb attack and a separate violent clash between political factions have left multiple people injured and raised intense scrutiny over local security arrangements.

Bomb Scare in Nawda Constituency

Late at night, miscreants hurled a series of crude bombs on a road in the Shibnagar area of the Nawda Assembly constituency. The explosions triggered widespread panic, primarily because the blast site was located barely 50 meters from Shibnagar Primary School, a designated polling booth.

  • Casualties: One local woman was injured in the blast but is currently reported to be in stable condition. TMC candidate Sahina Mumtaz Khan, who was nearby, was unharmed.

  • Political Fallout: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abu Taher Khan condemned the attack, alleging it was a coordinated effort by CPI(M) and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP)-backed workers to intimidate voters under the cover of darkness.

Midnight Clashes in Domkal

Adding to the district's unrest, fresh violence erupted in the Domkal block. A heated argument between CPI(M) and TMC supporters in the Sardarpara area of Raipur quickly escalated into a violent confrontation late at night.

  • The Incident: Rival groups attacked each other using sharp weapons before local residents intervened.

  • Casualties: At least three people from both sides sustained injuries. They were rushed to the Domkal Super Specialty Hospital, where one CPI(M) worker is currently reported to be in critical condition.

Security Stepped Up Ahead of Polls

The twin incidents have intensified the political heat in Murshidabad. Despite the heavy deployment of central forces in the region, the proximity of the bombings to a polling station has put law enforcement under the microscope. Local police and central forces quickly reached both spots, brought the situations under control, and have significantly stepped up area patrolling to ensure voter safety ahead of the polls.
