Cloud burst in Doda, landslide in Katra, Leh-Manali highway collapsed... Heavy rains cause devastation from J&K to Himachal

Cloudburst has caused heavy destruction in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Heavy rains started suddenly due to cloudburst in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday (26 August 2025), in which about 15 houses were washed away and three people died. Relief and rescue work is being done rapidly in the affected areas, but there is an atmosphere of panic among the local people. Due to heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir, mobile and fiber network has come to a standstill for the time being. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert of heavy rain in many areas during the next few hours.

1. Due to heavy rains, the journey of Mata Vaishno Devi has been stopped as there was a sudden landslide on this route. This accident happened near Ardhkumwari, where thousands of devotees go to the court of Maa Vaishno Devi every day. 5 people died in this accident while 14 people are injured. According to the officials of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Himkoti route was closed first after heavy rains. According to the IMD, there is a threat of flood in Udhampur, Samba, Doda, Jammu, Kathua and Kishtwar districts till 5:30 am on August 27.

2. The Tawi river in Udhampur is currently flowing above the danger mark. A part of the bridge on the Tawi river in Bhagwati Nagar was washed away. The water level of this river is much higher than the water level recorded during the floods in 2014. Water may reach Jammu city in the coming few hours. As a precaution, the main Tawi bridge from Bikram Chowk, Jammu has been closed for vehicular movement.

3. The Jammu Divisional Commissioner, along with the Deputy Commissioners of all the 10 districts, apprised the Chief Minister of the ground situation and preparations in their respective areas. The Chief Minister was apprised of the highest flood level recorded at various places, warning level and rising water level in rivers, drains and other water bodies. The Chief Minister directed the administration to ensure timely supply of food, clean drinking water, medicines and other essential commodities to the affected families.

4. Due to heavy rains, landslides and flash floods in many places disrupted normal life. Many buildings collapsed and connectivity with the National Highway was lost. The water level of the Beas river in Manali rose so much that the water entered the plains of Manali, causing the Manali-Leh National Highway to collapse.

5. Due to continuous heavy rains in the Jammu region, the North Railway on Tuesday canceled 18 trains to and from Katra, Udhampur and Jammu railway stations. Heavy rains have been lashing the Jammu region since Monday night, causing damage to bridges, disruption of road connectivity and inundation of large areas, forcing people to move to safer areas.

6. According to railway officials, train services from Pathankot to Kandrori in Himachal Pradesh have also been suspended due to heavy soil erosion and flash floods on the Chakki river. He said four trains were short terminated at Ferozepur, Manda and Chak Rakhwal. He said that the movement of trains continues on the Katra-Srinagar route.

7. Traffic has been suspended on Jammu-Srinagar and Kishtwar-Doda National Highway, while many hilly roads have been blocked or damaged due to landslides or flash floods.

8. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that all schools in the state will remain closed from August 27-30 due to the forecast of heavy rains. Due to heavy rains, there are flood conditions in many districts of Punjab.

9. The high altitude areas of the Union Territory of Ladakh received the first snowfall of the season while its lower areas received moderate rain. Officials said that there was snowfall at Khardung La Pass, situated at an altitude of 18,379 feet. There has been rain in Leh and Kargil district headquarters as well as other sub-divisions. The IMD has issued a red alert regarding heavy rains in Ladakh.

10. In view of bad weather and flood-like situation in the area, all government and private schools in Jammu division will remain closed on August 27, 2025.
