Zambian Security Forces Raid Opposition Leader’s Residence, Former Cabinet Minister Fatally Shot

The Operation and Fatal Shooting

Zambian police confirmed that former Transport Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was shot and killed during a joint security force raid at the residence of main opposition leader Brian Mundubile.

The operation was conducted by a Joint Task Force team. According to official statements from law enforcement authorities, security personnel entered the premises and encountered gunfire and resistance, prompting the task force to return fire. Kafwaya—who served as the Minister of Transport from 2019 to 2021 under the Patriotic Front government—was fatally wounded during the exchange.

Seizure of Arms and Arrests

Authorities reported seizing restricted, military-grade weaponry during the operation, including automatic Uzi firearms and five AK-47 assault rifles. Law enforcement officials stated that the seized weapons are undergoing forensic examination and detailed investigation to determine their ownership, origin, intended use, and potential links to alleged offenses, including treason.

A total of 11 individuals were rounded up during the operation. Among those arrested were three former military commandos. Opposition figures noted that the detainees included members of Mundubile's security team and regional alliance representatives.

Post-Election Political Context

The security raid took place in the immediate aftermath of the general election. The government stated the action targeted a suspected militia that posed a severe threat to state security.

Opposition leader Brian Mundubile—who went into hiding following the raid—rejected allegations that his alliance was involved in any militia activities, illegal insurgencies, or actions threatening state security. Opposition representatives further claimed electoral irregularities during the polls and announced plans to challenge the official election results in court.
