Trump Faces Countdown: May 1 Deadline Looms for Congressional War Approval

The Situation: U.S. President Donald Trump is approaching a critical legal deadline regarding ongoing military operations (specifically the conflict involving Iran). Under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, a president can only engage U.S. forces in hostilities for 60 days without formal authorization from Congress.

Why May 1 Matters: The "clock" for this conflict officially started in early March. If Trump does not receive a formal Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) by May 1, he is legally required to begin withdrawing troops. He has exactly one week to convince lawmakers to back the continuation of the war.

Internal Party Friction: While the President usually enjoys solid support from his party, the situation is changing:

  • Republican Defectors: At least 10 Republican lawmakers have expressed opposition or hesitation, citing concerns over "forever wars" or constitutional overreach.

  • The Veto Factor: Even if Congress passes a resolution to stop the war, Trump could attempt to veto it, but the growing number of Republican dissenters makes a "veto-proof" majority a real threat to his strategy.

  •

: If no approval is granted, the administration must either halt military strikes, invoke a final 30-day withdrawal window, or face a massive constitutional crisis by ignoring the law.
