Khalistan MP Amritpal accused of consuming drugs in jail:
Khalistan supporter and independent MP from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib seat Amritpal Singh's associates have given statements to the police that he consumes drugs. Sources have revealed that this has been mentioned in the challan presented by the police in the Ajnala court. Amritpal Singh's associates Varinder Singh Fauji and Bhagwant Singh Prime Minister Bajeke have given statements to the police. Amritpal is lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam.
Meanwhile, Amritpal's lawyer and legal advisor Iman Singh Khara says that by-election has been announced on the Tarn Taran assembly seat and Amritpal's party-Akali Dal Waris Punjab is also contesting in this election. That is why all this is happening with the intention of defaming Amritpal.
The lawyer said that the statements of Amritpal's associates, whose statements are being claimed, have no importance. This statement is under Section 27 and there is no need to challenge it.
However, he has also said that he is going to challenge the National Security Act (NSA) imposed on Amritpal Singh for the third time in the Supreme Court.
Amritpal is lodged in Assam jail
Khalistani supporter Amritpal Singh was arrested in April 2023 under the National Security Act (NSA). Amritpal is currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam. Amritpal Singh is also accused in several FIRs including attacking Ajnala police station.
While in jail, Amritpal Singh won the 2024 Lok Sabha election as an independent candidate from Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency in Punjab. Amritpal Singh defeated Congress' Kulbir Singh Zira by a margin of about 2 lakh votes. After winning from Khadoor Sahib, Amritpal got parole for swearing-in.
The matter also reached the Supreme Court
A petition challenging the election of Amritpal Singh had also reached the Supreme Court. The petitioner had claimed that Article 84 of the Constitution deals with qualifications for membership of Parliament, and states that no person shall be qualified to fill a seat in Parliament unless he is a citizen of India. The Supreme Court had dismissed the petition, saying that there are procedures prescribed for this and there are provisions in the Representation of the People Act.
