Gurdaspur Encounter: Deceased's Mother Petitions High Court for CBI Probe; Punjab DGP Summoned

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken cognizance of the encounter case of Ranjeet Singh, accused of killing policemen at the Adian police station in Gurdaspur. The Punjab DGP will present his side of the case shortly. This hearing will be conducted via video conferencing. Meanwhile, the deceased's mother, Sukhjinder Kaur, has filed a petition in the court demanding an investigation by a retired judge or the CBI. The petition will be heard tomorrow. The family is raising questions about the encounter. Furthermore, the young man's last rites have not yet been performed.

Will be heard alongside the Lawrence interview case

According to reports, this case has been scheduled for 2 pm today. Gangster Lawrence's jail interview case will also be heard during the same time. The court has ordered DGP Gaurav to have his response ready. This is the second case in which the court has taken cognizance. Previously, the court also took cognizance of the murder of kabaddi promoter Rana Balachauriya in Mohali.

What happened on February 22nd?

On February 22, two policemen were shot dead at a police checkpost in Adian village near the India-Pakistan border in Gurdaspur. Among those killed were ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard Constable Ashok Kumar. Police say the attack was orchestrated by Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI.

Three young men were lured with approximately 20,000 rupees. The main accused in the case, 19-year-old Ranjeet Singh, a resident of Adian village, was killed in a police encounter in the Puranashaala area on February 25. Police say he was trying to escape from custody and opened fire, prompting police to return fire.

Police arrested the second accused, Dilawar Singh, while the third, Inderjit Singh, was later apprehended in Amritsar. However, controversy erupted over the incident. Ranjeet Singh's family alleged it was a fake encounter.

They claim the police abducted him from his home and later killed him. The family also said that CCTV cameras in the area were removed and demanded a proper post-mortem.
