Kargil Martyr's Wife Dr. Sudha Yadav Appointed Karnataka Governor: Key Highlights of Her Political Journey
President Droupadi Murmu has appointed senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Member of Parliament Dr. Sudha Yadav as the new Governor of Karnataka. The appointment came as part of a gubernatorial reshuffle across six states. Dr. Yadav succeeds Thaawar Chand Gehlot in Karnataka’s Raj Bhavan.
She becomes only the second woman in the state’s history to hold this constitutional office, following V. S. Ramadevi.

Entry into Politics: Backed by Narendra Modi
A prominent leader from Haryana's Ahirwal belt, Dr. Yadav holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from IIT Roorkee. Her life changed significantly during the 1999 Kargil conflict, when her husband, BSF Deputy Commandant Sukhbir Singh Yadav, died in service.
Following the advice of Narendra Modi, who was then the BJP Haryana state in-charge, Dr. Yadav entered active politics. She contested the 1999 Lok Sabha elections from Mahendragarh and defeated heavyweight rival Rao Inderjit Singh by a margin of over 1.39 lakh votes.
Rise Through Party Ranks
Beyond serving as a parliamentarian from 1999 to 2004, Dr. Yadav contributed widely to national public administration and party operations:
-
Backward Classes Representation: She served as a member of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) from 2019 to 2022.
-
Highest Decision-Making Body: In August 2022, she was inducted into the BJP Parliamentary Board and Central Election Committee, becoming only the second woman leader after Sushma Swaraj to sit on the board.
Her appointment as Governor reflects the party's recognition of her organizational track record and seniority.
Broader Focus on Female Leadership
Dr. Yadav's appointment aligns with recent appointments of women in key governance and organizational roles:
-
Dr. Archana Gupta: Appointed Haryana BJP State President in May 2026, becoming the second woman to lead the party in the state after Dr. Kamla Verma (1980).
-
Smriti Irani: Assigned state in-charge responsibilities for Haryana during recent central adjustments.
-
Rekha Sharma: Former NCW chief and Rajya Sabha MP, assigned co-in-charge responsibilities for Telangana
