Punjab Assembly Polls 2027: Amritpal Singh Likely to Contest Against CM Bhagwant Mann and SAD Chief Sukhbir Badal from Two Seats

Mohali — In a major political move ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the 'Waris Punjab De' backed political front is preparing to field jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh directly against Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal. According to party insiders, Amritpal Singh will contest from two separate assembly segments.

The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting of senior leadership held in Mohali, attended by Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, along with prominent party strategists.

Currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam under the National Security Act (NSA), Amritpal Singh secured a victory as an independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary seat during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections while behind bars.

Internal Surveys and Strategic Contests

Party sources revealed that internal surveys were conducted across key constituencies, including Lambi and Gidderbaha. The party’s core strategy is to place Amritpal Singh in direct electoral combat against the principal faces of the state's traditional and governing parties:

  • Contesting Sukhbir Singh Badal’s Turf: With Sukhbir Singh Badal announcing his intention to contest from Gidderbaha rather than his traditional bastion Jalalabad, Amritpal Singh is slated to contest against him from Gidderbaha.

  • Challenging CM Bhagwant Mann: Amritpal Singh will also enter the fray from whichever seat CM Bhagwant Mann contests. Bhagwant Mann currently represents the Dhuri constituency in Sangrur district, where he secured a substantial victory in the 2022 state elections.

Seat Realignment: Shift from Rampura Phul

Initially, the party had planned to field Amritpal Singh from Rampura Phul, a constituency where Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa secured a massive lead during the 2024 parliamentary polls. However, the Mohali meeting revised this calculation to prioritize high-profile direct face-offs against the state's top leadership. The front has now cleared Gill Ronta as its candidate for Rampura Phul.
