Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel arrested over rape allegation, woman claims he promised to marry her
IPL star and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested by West Bengal Police following severe allegations of sexual assault, criminal intimidation, and physical abuse lodged by a third-year medical student. The arrest took place in Hooghly district after the Calcutta High Court ordered proactive police intervention to apprehend the 23-year-old cricketer and seize electronic evidence linked to the case.
Allegations of Deceit, Intimidation, and Confinement
The complaint, initially lodged at the Mogra Police Station in Hooghly, details a relationship spanning roughly three and a half years. According to the complainant—a medical student originally from Karnataka—she first met Porel in early 2023. She alleged that Porel established physical relations under the explicit promise of marriage and that discussions regarding their alliance had taken place between both families.
However, the complainant stated that differences arose after she discovered Porel’s ties with other women, prompting him to distance himself and renege on the marriage commitment.
The petition highlights a key incident on April 2, 2026, when the woman met Porel in Delhi. She accused the cricketer of isolating her, denying her food, and inflicting physical abuse, leaving her severely weakened and requiring immediate medical assistance. Additionally, the complaint alleges that private moments were recorded without her consent and subsequently used by Porel to threaten her against taking legal recourse.
High Court Directive and Police Action
Dissatisfied with initial investigative progress, the victim approached the Calcutta High Court, citing police inaction. Hearing the matter, Justice Saugata Bhattacharya issued directives ordering West Bengal Police to trace and arrest Porel while securing all personal electronic devices to prevent the potential dissemination of confidential or objectionable images.
Following the court's mandate, Mogra Police seized a digital drive containing potential evidence for forensic audit. Porel was located and taken into custody from a residence in Emami City under the Dum Dum police station jurisdiction.
Subsequent to his arrest, Porel underwent mandatory medical checks before being produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Chinsurah, where his bail application was rejected and he was remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
Relevant Legal Charges
Police have booked Abishek Porel under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act:
-
Section 69 (BNS): Sexual intercourse by deceitful means, including false promises of marriage.
-
Criminal Intimidation & Illegal Confinement Sections (BNS): Covers unlawful detention, threat of harm, and physical assault.
-
Sections 66 & 72 (IT Act): Pertaining to privacy violations and unauthorized handling or distribution of private digital content.
Porel had earlier denied the allegations, stating he would clarify matters through the formal legal process.
