Cabinet Approves Anti-Paper Leak Bill; PM Modi Announces Fast-Track Courts Amid Opposition Uproar

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially approved the Paper Leak Amendment Bill. This decisive step aims to introduce stringent punishments for those involved in exam irregularities. The bill is slated to be introduced in Parliament on July 27.

PM Modi’s Midnight Address to Students

Addressing the growing concerns, PM Modi released a 2.56-minute video message at midnight on Thursday. Highlighting the government's stance, he stated:

Paper leaks are not a minor issue and cause immense pain to millions of students and their parents.
Over the past two and a half months, strict actions have been taken, and the culprits are currently in jail.
To ensure students did not lose an academic year, exams for 22 lakh students were conducted in record time, with results declared on July 19.
The government has issued directives to establish fast-track courts for the swift resolution of such cases.

Opposition Demands Education Minister's Resignation

The midnight video drew sharp criticism from the opposition. Rahul Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter), dismissing the address as a "useless midnight video." He demanded the immediate removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, strict punishment for those who resorted to violence against protesting students, and a public apology.

Similarly, CJP National Spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka stated that the strictest action the government could take right now is to remove Dharmendra Pradhan from his cabinet post.

Background: The NEET UG Paper Leak Controversy

The controversy stems from the NEET UG paper leak that occurred on May 3.

Protests: For the past month, the CJP has been protesting at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk also sat on a 26-day fast, while opposition MPs continue to create an uproar in Parliament.
CBI Investigation: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe, conducting raids across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi, and other states. So far, 13 accused have been arrested, and the CBI is expected to file a charge sheet soon.
