Mohammad Kaif Drops Bombshell on Kohli's Test Retirement
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has made a sensational claim regarding Virat Kohli's decision to walk away from Test cricket. According to Kaif, the legendary batter felt an acute lack of backing from within the Indian team environment before hanging up his red-ball boots. Kaif revealed that Kohli felt "people within had no faith in him" and that his role and importance in the side were progressively diminishing.
Speaking on the team setup, Kaif suggested that the shifting dynamics and changing leadership environment created an uncomfortable atmosphere for the former captain. "It seemed that he felt like he was not getting importance and backing, and the people within had no faith in him," Kaif stated. He further argued that had Kohli been given the proper assurance and support, he could have continued to feature prominently in Test cricket.
A Shift in Team Environment & Backing
Kaif’s remarks align with comments from other experts who pointed toward a drastic transition in Team India's dressing room culture following leadership changes. Under previous management—most notably during former head coach Ravi Shastri's tenure—Kohli enjoyed unyielding support and a high-energy environment built around his aggressive style. However, the shift in coaching personnel and management direction altered that comfort zone, leaving Kohli feeling alienated during a period of fluctuating Test form.
Critics like Sanjay Manjrekar noted that while Shastri was a vocal ally who constantly shielded Kohli, the change in support structures made it harder for the star batter to feel fully valued. Kohli himself hinted at this mindset, emphasizing that he chooses to be in spaces where he feels needed rather than constantly being pushed to re-prove his worth.
Resurgence in White-Ball Cricket
Despite stepping away from the longest format, Kohli has continued to display world-class form in white-ball cricket.
