Major Shift in Mobile Calling: CNAP Service Set to Roll Out Nationwide from November 1 to Curb Spam Calls

If you are exhausted from receiving persistent spam, marketing, and unknown calls throughout the day, relief is on the horizon. Starting November 1, a landmark regulation regarding mobile telecommunications will take effect across the country. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed all telecom operators—including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL—to implement the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) system.

What is CNAP and How Does It Operate?

Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) is a telecom-level caller identification service designed to display the actual registered name of the caller directly on the recipient’s handset during an incoming call. Unlike crowd-sourced apps, this system relies on verified identity records.

Telecom service providers are establishing a verified subscriber database linked with SIM cards. When an incoming call is initiated, the network references the database and displays the subscriber’s KYC-verified name directly on the receiver’s phone screen.

Which Name Will Appear on Your Screen?

The implementation of CNAP follows distinct operational protocols:

  • Saved Contacts: If the incoming number is already stored in your device’s address book, your manually saved contact name will take precedence.

  • Unsaved/Unknown Numbers: For numbers not saved in your directory, the verified name registered on the subscriber’s official ID during SIM purchase will be shown.

  • International Calls: Incoming foreign calls will not show individual names; instead, they will be explicitly tagged as ‘International Call’.

  • Enterprise & Business Numbers: Legitimate businesses and verified corporate entities can display their officially registered trade names or registered trademarks.

How Will Privacy and Data Security Be Handled?

To address privacy and security concerns, telecom regulators and operators have implemented key safeguards:

  • Transient caller identity data is wiped from system memory immediately once the call concludes.

  • Users subscribed to CLIR (Calling Line Identification Restriction) for legitimate confidentiality reasons will have their names shielded from display.

This structural rollout is expected to significantly reduce telemarketing nuisance, cyber fraud, and anonymous harassment over phone networks.
