A catastrophe has unfolded in northern Nepal after a massive flash flood surged across the Tibet border into Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts. The sudden deluge—spurred by a flood originating on the Tibetan side of the border—swept through villages, damaged critical infrastructure, and left hundreds of individuals untraced, including at least 105 Indian nationals.

At least eight fatalities have been confirmed so far as emergency personnel struggle against high water levels and difficult mountain terrain to reach survivors.

Origination of the Deluge and Suspected Causes

The flood waters struck early Wednesday morning around 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM local time along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli River channels. Local officials noted that there was no significant rainfall recorded at the Rasuwa district headquarters at the time of the event, pointing directly toward an upstream surge originating in Tibet.

Hydrological experts suspect the sudden torrent was triggered by a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) or a massive landslide dam breach on the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau. The sudden wall of muddy water swept downstream into Nepal, brief inundations swallowing entire market areas like Timure, destroying customs offices, and damaging key bridges connecting Nepal to China.

Casualties and Over 380 Travellers Untraced

According to a preliminary situation update released by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), at least 384 travellers are currently listed as missing across affected zones.

• Indian Nationals: 105 Indian tourists are reported missing, alongside 37 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

• Other International Tourists: Travellers from the US, UK, Australia, Netherlands, Malaysia, and South Africa are among the missing, along with at least 93 Nepali nationals.

• Travel Agencies Involved: Tourism authorities tracked these numbers via logs from local trekking agencies, including Trekkers Society, Samrat Tours & Travels, Leaf Holiday, and Himalayan Glacier.

Official search efforts are actively cross-checking manifests to locate those who may simply be stranded without mobile network connectivity due to damaged communications towers.

Widespread Infrastructure Damage and Downstream Alerts

The force of the flash flood caused extensive damage to mountain transit corridors and energy assets. Multiple hydroelectric projects along the river system—including facilities connected to the Rasuwagadhi and Chilime systems—have suffered operational damage.

In response to the surge moving downstream through the Trishuli River system, Nepal's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority issued high alerts for lower-lying districts including Gorkha and Chitwan, directing residents along the banks to evacuate to higher ground immediately. Emergency air rescues are being coordinated by the Nepal Army and Nepal Police, though high waters and ongoing mudslides present major hazards to aerial operations.
