Public Outrage Intensifies in Bengal: Mahua Moitra Becomes the Latest Target of Egg Attacks

Ever since the BJP government came to power in West Bengal, public anger against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been boiling over. From Abhishek Banerjee to several other top leaders, TMC politicians have faced the wrath of the public, quite literally, with eggs. Now, TMC MP Mahua Moitra’s name has been added to this growing list.

On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra was targeted in an egg-throwing incident. The attack allegedly took place inside a restaurant where she was meeting with party workers. A group of protestors gathered outside and began hurling eggs at the establishment.

Caught on Camera: The Viral Videos

The entire dramatic incident was captured on camera from two different perspectives, and two videos have since gone viral:

• The Protestors' View: Filmed by the demonstrators outside, this video shows a group of men and women chanting slogans and throwing eggs at the restaurant, while normal traffic continues on the road next to them.
  
  
  

• Mahua Moitra’s View: Recorded by Moitra herself from inside the restaurant, this footage shows eggs smashing against the windows while she sits with local TMC leaders and party workers, documenting the chaos on her phone.

The TMC has alleged that BJP supporters are behind the attack. However, the BJP has not yet issued an official reaction to these allegations.

Why is the Public Hurling Eggs?

The trend of throwing eggs at TMC leaders has picked up significantly following the party's defeat in West Bengal. Before Mahua Moitra, prominent leaders like Abhishek Banerjee, Bapaditya Dasgupta, Sabyasachi Dutta, and Madan Mitra have all faced similar "egg showers."

This public fury didn't spark overnight. It is the result of years of pent-up resentment from local citizens, ranging from small business owners to auto-rickshaw drivers. Locals allege that during its tenure, the TMC extorted crores of rupees from them through "cut money" (commissions) and illegal extortion.

The matter of these egg attacks has now reached the legal corridors. Taking a strict stance on the recurring incidents, the Calcutta High Court has demanded a detailed report from the state government.
