New Delhi. The risk of mosquito-borne diseases is rising in the capital, Delhi, even before the onset of the monsoon. According to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) weekly report up to June 6, 39 cases of malaria and 152 cases of dengue have been reported so far this year. Additionally, 8 cases of chikungunya have been recorded.

Although there were 66 cases of malaria during the same period last year, the corporation is in no mood to be complacent. The MCD has launched a comprehensive campaign to control mosquitoes.

According to the report, 30,948 legal notices have been issued so far where conditions conducive to mosquito breeding were found. Prosecutions have also been initiated against 3,547 individuals for violating regulations.

Survey of 1.62 crore households

The corporation surveyed over 1.62 crore households to identify mosquito breeding sites. Mosquito breeding was detected in 32,558 of these homes. Furthermore, measures to destroy larvae through insecticide spraying were carried out in 1,72,174 households.

A senior Health Department official stated that special emphasis is being placed on eliminating mosquito breeding points prior to the monsoon. Legal action, alongside spraying operations, is being taken in households where mosquito breeding was found.
