The accused officer, identified as Ranbir, was caught red-handed inside the Sector 7 police chowki (post) while accepting a bribe of ₹2,500 from a local resident. The bribe was allegedly demanded to release and return the complainant's recovered two-wheeler.

Background of the Incident

The matter dates back to May 4, when the complainant, identified as Somdutt, noticed that his motorcycle had gone missing from the Sector 7 area. Believing it had been stolen, Somdutt approached the Sector 7 police post to lodge a formal complaint.

Subsequent investigations by the police revealed that the motorcycle had not been stolen by thieves. Instead, because it was a financed vehicle with outstanding, delayed installments, recovery agents representing the finance company had repossessed the vehicle. The agents had towed it away and parked it at their official yard located in Sikri.

Following this discovery, the local police intervened, recovered the vehicle from the finance company’s yard, and brought it back to the Sector 7 police chowki. The authorities then informed Somdutt that his motorcycle had been safely retrieved and was keeping in police custody.

The Demand for a Bribe

The trouble began when Somdutt arrived at the police post to officially reclaim his motorcycle. According to bureau officials, Head Constable Ranbir intercepted the complainant and explicitly demanded a bribe of ₹5,000 in the name of the post-in-charge to release the vehicle. When Somdutt expressed his financial inability to pay such a steep amount, the officer negotiated and reduced the demand to ₹2,500.

Frustrated by the relentless, daily demands for money over a span of three to four days, and unwilling to give in to corruption, Somdutt decided to take legal action. He approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau and submitted a formal complaint detailing the extortion attempts.

The ACB Trap Action

Upon receiving the complaint, senior ACB officials verified the allegations through a preliminary investigation. Once the claims were deemed authentic, the bureau formulated a meticulous sting operation to catch the rogue cop in the act.

On Saturday morning, the ACB team treated the ₹2,500 cash with a special chemical powder and handed it over to Somdutt, instructing him to deliver it to the officer. The ACB team discreetly positioned themselves right outside the Sector 7 police post.

As soon as Somdutt handed over the marked currency bills to Head Constable Ranbir inside the station, the monitoring ACB team swooped in. They caught Ranbir red-handed, and a quick chemical wash of his hands turned pink, conclusively proving he had handled the bribe money. The illegal cash was successfully recovered from his possession on the spot, causing immediate panic among other personnel present at the police post.

Current Legal Status and Investigation

The Anti-Corruption Bureau team took Head Constable Ranbir into custody and transferred him to the ACB police station, where an official First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against him under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

ACB spokespersons stated that senior officials are currently interrogating the accused officer. Furthermore, the bureau is actively investigating the potential involvement or role of the chowki in-charge (police post head), given that the bribe was initially demanded under their name.
