WASHINGTON/TEHRAN — U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a series of high-stakes claims regarding the stability of the Iranian government, asserting that Tehran is on the "brink of collapse" and is privately seeking a way to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump’s "State of Collapse" Assertion

In a series of recent statements and social media posts, President Trump claimed that Iranian authorities have reached out to Washington, indicating a dire internal situation. According to Trump, the Islamic Republic is struggling with a "leadership crisis" following the intense military and economic pressure applied by the U.S. and its allies since early 2026.

"Iran just informed us they are in a 'State of Collapse.' They want the Strait of Hormuz opened immediately so they can figure out their leadership situation," Trump stated, suggesting that the U.S. naval blockade has reached its breaking point.

 

The "Dual Blockade" at the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which 20% of the world’s oil and gas passes, has been at the center of the conflict. The current situation is described by experts as a "dual blockade":

• Iran's Stance: Since February 2026, Iran has restricted traffic, laid mines, and reportedly charged massive "tolls" for passage.

   

• The U.S. Response: In mid-April, the Trump administration intensified a naval blockade of Iranian ports, aiming to cut off all Iranian oil exports and cripple their revenue.

   

Tehran’s Defiance: "We Will Not Yield"

Despite Trump’s claims of an imminent collapse, Iranian officials have publicly dismissed the narrative of "surrender." The Iranian Foreign Ministry and parliamentary leaders characterized Trump’s words as "psychological warfare." Iran maintains that its actions in the Strait are a defensive response to U.S. aggression and has vowed to resist "bullying" and economic "terrorism."
