In a scathing indictment of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has detailed the reasons behind his recent defection to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a video statement released on April 27, 2026, Chadha alleged that the party he helped found has devolved into a "toxic work environment" controlled by a handful of "corrupt and compromised" individuals.

The Three Options: Why Chadha Left

Chadha revealed that before making the jump to the BJP, he weighed three distinct paths for his political future:

1. Quit Politics Entirely: Walking away from public life after 15 years of service.

    

2. Internal Reform: Staying within AAP to push for change from the inside (which he deemed impossible given the current leadership).

    

3. A New Platform: Shifting to a different political stage to continue "constructive politics" and public service.

    

He ultimately chose the third option, joining the BJP along with six other AAP Rajya Sabha MPs—including Sandeep Pathak, Swati Maliwal, and Harbhajan Singh.

Allegations of Toxicity and Corruption

Chadha, a former Chartered Accountant who dedicated his "prime youth" to AAP, claimed the party has strayed from its anti-corruption roots. Key allegations include:

• Compromised Leadership: He claimed the party is now run by people working for personal gain rather than the public interest.

   

• Stifled Voices: Leaders are allegedly "stopped from working" and prevented from speaking freely in Parliament.

   

• The "Sheesh Mahal" Controversy: Chadha cited the "Sheesh Mahal Part Two" (controversies surrounding leader residences) as a primary reason for the party's recent electoral losses and his own disillusionment.

   

The Strength in Numbers

Defending his move against "traitor" labels, Chadha emphasized that his exit was not an isolated incident.

"One man can be wrong, two people can be wrong, but seven people cannot be wrong," Chadha stated, referring to the collective defection of the seven MPs.
