UP Heatwave Alert: Banda Records 75-Year High at 47.6°C

The scorching summer of 2026 has officially entered a dangerous phase in North India. Banda, located in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, has been identified as the hottest location in the country, with temperatures reaching a blistering 47.6°C. This reading is not only the highest in India this season but also marks a 75-year record for the month of April in the district.

• Record-Breaking Heat: The 47.6°C recorded in Banda is 5.4°C above the seasonal normal, surpassing its previous April record of 47.4°C set back in 2022.

• Six Cities Cross 46°C: While Banda leads the surge, at least five other cities in the region have seen the mercury breach the 46°C mark, creating "severe heatwave" conditions across the state.

• Bundelkhand Under Siege: Cities like Jhansi (45.2°C), Prayagraj, and Orai are among the hardest hit. The rocky terrain of the Bundelkhand region is contributing to the rapid rise in local temperatures.

• Public Health Warnings: The state government has issued a Yellow Alert, advising citizens to avoid outdoor activities between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Schools have been directed to adjust timings, and health departments are on high alert for cases of heatstroke.

Meteorologists attribute this extreme spike to a combination of dry, hot winds blowing from the deserts of Rajasthan and a lack of any significant Western Disturbance to provide cloud cover or rain.
