The massive blast occurred on Sunday afternoon, April 19, 2026, at the Vanaja Fireworks factory located in Kattanarpatti village. According to officials, the explosion originated in a shed where workers were mixing highly flammable chemicals for firecracker production. The impact of the blast was so severe that it reduced at least four rooms to rubble and was heard several kilometers away, trapping many under the debris.

Suspected Cause & Safety Violations

While the factory held a valid license from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), preliminary investigations revealed severe safety breaches. Authorities noted that the factory was operating illegally on Sunday, which is a mandatory rest day for the industry. Furthermore, the unit allegedly had far more workers crowded into the chemical mixing sheds than the legal limit allows, severely compounding the death toll when the chemicals accidentally ignited.

Rescue Operations and Secondary Blast

Fire and rescue personnel battled the flames for hours, heavily impeded by continuous bursts from unfinished firecrackers. The operation faced a major setback when a secondary explosion occurred around 7:20 PM as an earthmover was clearing debris, injuring additional rescue workers and police officers on the scene.
