A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Taiwan on Wednesday evening at approximately 5:47 p.m. No damage has been reported. The tremors were felt in China, the Philippines, and Japan.

According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), the epicenter was located 10.1 kilometers north of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 11.9 kilometers.

Earthquake intensity in Taiwan is measured on a scale of 1 to 7.  An intensity level of 5 was recorded in Taitung County, while levels of 4 were felt in Hualien and Pingtung counties.

No damage reported so far

The National Fire Agency reported that there have been no reports of damage in Taiwan so far.

Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC said the earthquake was not strong enough to require the evacuation of its factories across the island.

Taiwan is located near the convergence of two tectonic plates, making it prone to earthquakes.

According to the Central Weather Administration, alerts were issued in several areas, including Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan.

The earthquake intensity in Hualien and Pingtung counties was measured at level 4 on Taiwan's seven-level scale.

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck a year ago

Intensity levels of 3 were recorded in Kaohsiung, Nantou, Tainan, Chiayi County, Yunlin, Chiayi City, and Changhua, while levels of 2 were recorded in Taichung, Miaoli, Yilan, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City, Taoyuan, New Taipei, and Taipei.

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan in 2024, injuring over 1,000 people. In 2016, an earthquake in southern Taiwan killed more than 100 people, while a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in 1999 killed more than 2,000 people.
