Weather Warnings & Advisories

For the first time, a Red Alert has been issued for Punjab and Chandigarh, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by severe lightning. The Meteorological Department predicts this weather pattern will persist until July 31.

Authorities have issued strict advisories urging residents to:

• Avoid taking shelter under trees or utility poles.

• Stay away from waterlogged areas.

Additionally, an Orange Alert has been issued for the districts of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr (SBS Nagar), Rupnagar, and Mohali. These areas face a high risk of heavy downpours, thunderstorms, lightning, and severe waterlogging.

Looming Flood Threat in Punjab

The incessant rain has significantly elevated water levels in major reservoirs, sparking fears of potential flooding in Punjab:

• Bhakra Dam: The water level has reached 1595.38 feet, which is just 84 feet below the danger mark of 1680 feet.

• Pong Dam: The current water level stands at 1331.58 feet, leaving a buffer of just 58.42 feet before it hits the danger mark of 1390 feet.

According to experts, if the current weather persists, the Bhakra Dam could reach its danger mark in 20 to 30 days, while the Pong Dam could reach its limit in 15 to 25 days. Should this happen, authorities will be forced to open the floodgates, significantly increasing the risk of widespread flooding in Punjab.

Tragedy on the Highway: Family of 5 Killed

The torrential rains claimed the lives of an entire family in neighboring Himachal Pradesh. A car skidded off the wet Pathankot-Chamba National Highway and plunged into a deep gorge.

All five occupants, whose bodies were trapped inside the vehicle, perished. The deceased have been identified as car owner Bachchan Singh, his son Ripan (who was posted at the Pong Dam in the police department), his daughter-in-law Rimpi, his niece Kirti Rana (who worked privately in Chandigarh), and his 8-month-old grandson.

The family was returning home on Monday night after the infant underwent ear surgery at PGI Chandigarh.

Flash Floods Devastate Himachal Pradesh

In Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, heavy rains triggered massive flash floods. Residents were forced to flee their homes at midnight to save their lives.

The deluge of water and debris has caused severe damage to homes and businesses, with one house's entire ground floor completely buried in mud. In the Sarol neighborhood, approximately 10 vehicles were heavily damaged, while several others were swept away by the raging floodwaters.

The catastrophic weather has paralyzed transport networks, shutting down more than 250 roads across the state, including the crucial Pathankot-Bharmour National Highway.

Punjab today heavy rain- A yellow alert has been issued for rain in Punjab today. Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar, which border Himachal Pradesh, are likely to receive more than normal rainfall and such weather may continue for the next 24 hours. Apart from this, heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Mohali, Patiala and Ludhiana.

Keeping in mind the continuous rainfall in Pathankot as well, a big decision has been taken by the district administration. Due to continuous rainfall in Pathankot, the district administration has declared a holiday in all government and non-government schools, colleges and other educational institutions of Pathankot district on Monday, August 25, 2025 i.e. today.

After the rain in Jammu and Kashmir, the water level in Ranjit Sagar Dam has reached the danger mark of 527 meters. Due to which excess water has been released. This has increased the risk of floods in the Majha region of Punjab. The water level of the Ravi river is continuously rising, due to which the Pathankot-Jammu highway has already been closed and a high alert has been issued from Pathankot to Amritsar.

People have been advised not to go near the river in Ajnala. Due to the increase in water in the Ravi, Uj and Chakki rivers in Gurdaspur, a flood-like situation has arisen in many areas. The confluence of the Ravi and Uj rivers in Dinanagar, Makora Pattan, has been flooded and seven villages on the Pakistan border have lost contact with the rest of the area.

A rain warning continues in Punjab tomorrow as well. Today, there is a possibility of good rain in Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Pathankot and Rupnagar again. But after this, the weather is expected to remain normal for two days, i.e. until Wednesday and Thursday. A new round of rain will start from Friday.

घने कोहरे की मार के बीच पंजाब में कोल्ड-डे का अलर्ट जारी हो गया है। मौसम विभाग ने शुक्रवार व शनिवार को कोल्ड-डे रहने की भविष्यवाणी की है। विभाग के चंडीगढ़ केंद्र के निदेशक एके सिंह के मुताबिक कोल्ड-डे उस स्थिति में होता है, जब न्यूनतम तापमान 10 डिग्री सेल्सियस से नीचे पहुंच जाता है और अधिकतम तापमान में सामान्य की तुलना में 4.5 डिग्री से 6.4 डिग्री सेल्सियस तक कमी दर्ज की जाती है।

उन्होंने कहा कि बेहद घने कोहरे वाले जिलों में कोल्ड-डे रहेगा। इन जिलों में घने कोहरे की चादर के कारण सूर्य की किरणें जमीन तक नहीं पहुंच पाती हैं जिससे कोहरे का प्रभाव कम नहीं हो पाता है और ठिठुरन बढ़ जाती है। मौसम विभाग ने शुक्रवार के लिए पंजाब में रेड अलर्ट जारी कर दिया है। इसके तहत पंजाब के 16 जिलों अमृतसर, तरनातरन, कपूरथला, जालंधर, फिरोजपुर, फाजिल्का, फरीदकोट, मुक्तसर, मोगा, बठिंडा, लुधियाना, बरनाला, मानसा, संगरूर, रूपनगर व पटियाला में बेहद घने कोहरे की मार रहेगी।

उधर, गुरुवार को बेहद घने कोहरे के कारण अमृतसर में शून्य, पटियाला में मात्र 10 मीटर, लुधियाना में 20 और आदमपुर, बठिंडा, पठानकोट व हलवारा में 50 मीटर से भी कम दृश्यता दर्ज की गई। गुरुवार को सबसे कम 5.6 डिग्री सेल्सियस न्यूनतम तापमान एसबीएस नगर का रहा। हालांकि पंजाब के न्यूनतम तापमान में बुधवार के मुकाबले 1.1 डिग्री की वृद्धि दर्ज की गई। 

न्यूनतम तापमान सामान्य से 4.7 डिग्री सेल्सियस ऊपर है। एसबीएस नगर के अलावा अमृतसर का न्यूनतम तापमान 8.9 डिग्री, लुधियाना का 10.3, पटियाला का 9.0, पठानकोट का 9.0, बठिंडा का 9.0, फरीदकोट का 9.5, गुरदासपुर का 6.5, जालंधर का 9.5 व मोगा का 9.7 डिग्री सेल्सियस दर्ज किया गया। मौसम विभाग के मुताबिक अगले चार-पांच दिन पंजाब में मौसम शुष्क बना रहेगा।

मौसम विभाग के मुताबिक शुक्रवार को पंजाब के अधिकांश स्थानों पर बेहद घना कोहरा पड़ेगा। वहीं 30 व 31 दिसंबर के लिए ऑरेंज अलर्ट और एक जनवरी 2024 के लिए यलो अलर्ट जारी कर दिया है। इसके तहत इन तीन दिनों के दौरान पंजाब में कईं जगहों पर घने कोहरा पड़ने की संभावना है। विभाग ने अगले चार दिनों में लोगों को सावधानी के साथ वाहन चलाने की सलाह दी है। Punjab Weather Forecast
