Due to heavy rains and floods, all educational institutions in Punjab will remain closed till September 7. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced this on Wednesday (September 3).

He said, "As per the instructions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, in view of the flood situation, all government/aided/recognized and private schools, colleges, universities and polytechnics across Punjab will remain closed till September 7, 2025. Everyone is requested to strictly follow the guidelines of the local administration.''

In view of the flood situation in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had earlier announced the closure of schools from 27 to 30 August. After this, this date was extended till September 3.

Many rivers in spate
Punjab and Haryana also received rain today (September 3). This increased the difficulties faced by the people already troubled by the floods. Punjab is in the grip of severe floods due to the rise in Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers and seasonal drains due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a bulletin issued by state authorities on the situation from August 1 to September 2, floods in Punjab have claimed 30 lives and affected over 3.5 lakh people. Relief and rescue operations are underway by the NDRF, Army, BSF, Punjab Police and district authorities in the affected areas.

Due to incessant rains, the water level of some rivers, including the Yamuna, has risen, forcing Haryana authorities to open the gates of the Hathinikund barrage in Yamunanagar district. 3,29,313 cusecs of water was released from the Hathinikund barrage at 9 am on Monday.

What did CM Bhagwant Mann say?

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is constantly reviewing the situation. He visited Gatti Rajo village in Ferozepur on Tuesday (September 2). The CM said that proper compensation will be given for every kind of loss caused to the people due to the floods and new and effective ways will be explored to deal with such a situation in future.

Bhagwant Mann said, "Along with this, a demand has been made to the central government to increase the compensation for the losses caused due to natural disasters. Keep up your courage and enthusiasm. Keep your thinking positive and your morale intact. In this hour of crisis, our government and administration are standing with the people with full readiness. Every possible effort is being made to evacuate people safely. The situation will be normal very soon."

असम की डिब्रूगढ़ जेल में खालिस्तान समर्थक अमृतपाल सिंह के साथ बंद कुलवंत सिंह राऊके भी पंजाब में विधानसभा उपचुनाव चुनाव लड़ेगा। वह बरनाला सीट पर होने वाले उपचुनाव में उम्मीदवार होगा। इसका ऐलान कुलवंत सिंह के भाई महा सिंह ने शुक्रवार को किया।

महा सिंह ने कहा- 'मैंने शुक्रवार को अपने भाई से फोन पर बात की। उसने जेल में रहते हुए बरनाला उपचुनाव लड़ने का फैसला किया है। हम उसका पूरा समर्थन करेंगे।'

बरनाला सीट पर आम आदमी पार्टी (AAP) के गुरमीत सिंह मीत हेयर विधायक थे। संगरूर से सांसद बनने के बाद उन्होंने इस सीट से इस्तीफा दे दिया है।

38 वर्षीय कुलवंत सिंह मोगा जिले के राऊके गांव का रहने वाला है। वह पंजाब स्टेट पावर कॉर्पोरेशन लिमिटेड (PSPCL) में क्लर्क के पद पर काम कर चुका है। कुलवंत सिंह को अमृतपाल सिंह का साथ देने के आरोप में घर से हिरासत में लिया गया था। इसके बाद उस पर भी नेशनल सिक्योरिटी एक्ट (NSA) लगा दिया गया।

महा सिंह ने कहा कि पिता चरहत सिंह को भी पंजाब के उग्रवाद के दौर में 25 मार्च 1993 को पुलिस ने हिरासत में लिया था। वे कभी घर नहीं लौटे। आज तक हमें नहीं पता कि उन्हें फर्जी मुठभेड़ में मारा गया या वे अभी भी जीवित हैं। हमारे पास उनकी मौत का कोई सबूत नहीं है। उन्हें पुलिस ले गई और वे कभी वापस नहीं आए। उनके पिता को भी 1987 में NSA के तहत जेल में रखा गया था।

महा सिंह ने कहा कि पिता युवा अकाली दल के नेता थे और उन्हें पंजाब में जरनैल सिंह भिंडरावाले के खालिस्तान समर्थक आंदोलन का समर्थन करने के लिए हिरासत में लिया गया था। बाद में वे हमारे गांव के सरपंच भी बने और 25 मार्च 1993 को पुलिस उन्हें हमारे घर से जबरदस्ती ले गई। हमें नहीं पता कि उसके साथ क्या हुआ, क्योंकि हमें उसका शव कभी नहीं मिला।

पंजाब की संगरूर लोकसभा सीट पर सुबह 7 बजे से वोटिंग जारी है। सुबह नौ बजे तक इस सीट पर 11.36 प्रतिशत वोटिंग हुई। जबकि अब 11 बजे तक का डेटा सामने आ गया है। संगरूर सीट पर सुबह 11 बजे तक 26.26 प्रतिशत मतदान हो चुका है।

पंजाब में भीषण गर्मी के बावजूद लोग घरों से निकलकर वोटिंग के लिए मतदान केंद्रों पर पहुंच रहे हैं। इस बीच जानकारी सामने आई है कि पंजाब भाजपा के सीनियर नेता उप प्रधान केवल सिंह ढिल्लों बस कुछ ही देर में मतदान केंद्र पर पहुंचकर वोटिंग करेंगे।
